Latest Podcast Episode

In today’s episode, I chat with James Dalais, founder of Jacfruit in Mauritius. Jacfruit is an urban farm that started with micro greens and is slowly expanding. They are stocked in the local supermarkets with big dreams on the horizon. He learnt a lot from starting small and shares all the lessons and mistakes he made along the way.

Perspective

The Relative Pricing Pyramid

This concept helped put the pricing of services into perspective for me.

Everyone struggles to initially price their services when starting out.

They usually compare to the rest of the market and take a bit of a thumb-suck approach.

The pyramid above helps explain what you should be focusing on.

Value.

The quality of your product combined with urgency and solving a valuable problem makes you irreplaceable.

It’s OK to start at the bottom, but don’t be confused when you hit that ceiling and can’t make any more money.

You’re probably a commodity and easy to replace.

Climbing to the top of the pyramid doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ve become so good at what you do. Although this will help, the focus is actually on solving a particular problem.

If you niche down far enough, you can become the best in any field.

There are gaps in many markets all looking for a solution. If you can become the sole provider of that solution, you become irreplaceable.

Just some food for thought on a Monday.

You can find the blog post on the topic by Ship 30 for 30 here.

Tool

Grammarly

This is another tool that I almost feel silly mentioning.

I completely forget that I’m using it because it’s a part of everything I do.

It adds so much value and speed to my workflow that I have to have it on every computer I use.

It’s a simple Chrome extension that checks your spelling and grammar.

The free version is surprisingly good, and it speeds up my process of writing.

I can freely write as quickly as I want, knowing that Grammarly will pick up on all of my little mistakes.

It improves your writing too because it shows you your mistakes and helps you improve your writing clarity.

Even just using this for daily emails will save your ass.

And if you want to take it to the next level and improve many aspects of your writing, then the paid version is worth it.

This sounds like a cheesy ad, but it’s not. It’s just an app that I use every day and would recommend it to everyone.

What’s the one app you can’t do without?

Consume (Read / Watch / Listen)

Misinformation Conversation

This tweet from Joe Rogan is really taking off.

To give you some context, Peter Hotez said that the Rogan episode with Robert F. Kennedy was filled with vaccine misinformation.

During the episode, Kennedy said he can back up all of his claims with science and he would love to debate someone on the topic. People have been avoiding a debate with Kennedy for 18 years, which is a bit suspicious.

So, after Hotez’s comment above, Rogan said he will donate $100k to charity if he debates Kennedy on the topic.

Other wealthy people are now involved and this charity pot has now grown to over $2.6 Million for these two to have a debate.

And yet, Hotez is refusing to have the debate.

I’m not picking sides here, I’m just pointing out that if you make a public misinformation claim, surely you’re able to back it up in a debate?

Kennedy has some interesting views and seems like the presidential candidate most keen on radical change.

I’ll be following this closely and hopefully, Kennedy will get to debate someone on the topic before the election.

Do you think the debate is worth it, or a waste of time?

Let me know and please explain why, because I can’t figure out why you want to prove your point once and for all in public debate.

If you’re right, of course 😉

Concept

Delphi Method

The Delphi method or Delphi technique is a structured communication technique where experts usually have an allocated amount of time to respond to previous comments until they solve a problem.

It’s basically a way of getting your thoughts and opinions heard in a structured, objective way.

This method is usually applied in science, but on the My First Million Podcast, they were discussing applying it to business and debates.

It would be useful because everyone is different.

Some people struggle with speaking on the spot or haven’t prepared to respond to a certain point and need to learn more about the topic.

In these instances, the person who is more prepared or has taken the other by surprise can win the argument or get the motion pushed through.

The same can go for biases. Some people are more attractive than others, better speakers or, like a said, more prepared.

Even if we may not think we’re being influenced, we are. And these influences can affect the direction a business may go.

By applying the Delphi method to business decisions, people will have time to think about their responses, do the necessary research and possibly remain anonymous to remove bias.

This could be a productive and objective way to make decisions in a business.

It’s just a theory and might be impractical, I’m not sure. But I found the biases and ability points particularly interesting.

What do you think?

Could this help with more objective decision-making in the workplace?

Thanks for Reading

Now start something!
